About Boomplaas Cave

Boomplaas Cave is an exceptionally important Stone Age archaeological site located in the Cango Valley within the foothills of the Swartberg mountain range, north of Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. It features a deep, well-stratified five-metre sequence of deposits that preserves a record of human occupation and environmental change spanning between 60 000 and 80 000 years. Unlike the neighboring Cango Caves, which are highly commercialised tourist show-caves, Boomplaas Cave is primarily an active scientific and research site that provides critical insights into how early humans adapted to major climate shifts over millennia. Boomplaas Cave is not open for general public walk-ins or standard tourism.
