Muizenberg Station Historic Building

Muizenberg, Western CapeThe Muizenberg Railway Station is a National Heritage Site and one of Cape Town’s most iconic Edwardian-era buildings. Officially opened on 7 June 1913, the red-brick building with its striking teak clock tower was designed by a pupil of renowned architect Sir Herbert Baker. It served as the primary gateway for day-trippers when Muizenberg was known as the "Brighton of South Africa," South Africa's premier seaside holiday resort. Edwardian Design: The building features prominent red brickwork, arched sandstone entrances, and high wooden ceilings. Local Materials: Much of the stone used was sourced locally; paving and stairs came from Elsie's Peak in Fish Hoek, while the dressed sandstone originated from Kalk Bay. Unique Clock Tower: The tower is notably constructed from Burmese teak wood. Heritage Status: It was declared a National Monument in 1982 and underwent restoration to preserve its original charm while remaining a functional hub for the Southern Line.View details →
