About Middle North Battery
Middle North Battery is a historic coastal defense site in Simon’s Town, South Africa, part of the larger Scala Battery complex. It is most famous for housing a rare 9-inch rifled muzzle loading (RML) cannon that has been restored to working condition. he battery features a 12-ton, 9-inch RML gun manufactured in Woolwich, England, in 1855/1856. It was originally used on ironclad ships before being mounted at Middle North in 1896. This specific gun is notable for its 6-groove rifling, the only one of its kind manufactured with this specific configuration to stabilize shells during flight.
