About Lower North Battery

Unlike many polished tourist museums, this is an active military installation. You’ll find a mix of 18th-century stone fortifications and modern naval equipment. It has a rugged, "working" atmosphere that history buffs often find more authentic than a standard museum. It holds the distinction of being the oldest armed fortification in South Africa. While many original features like gun pits and magazines survive, they have often been built over by modern Navy infrastructure.
