About C.P Nel Museum

The C.P. Nel Museum is a historical institution located in Oudtshoorn, South Africa, housed within a sandstone building completed in 1906 that originally functioned as the Oudtshoorn Boys' High School. Officially opened as a museum in 1972, the site is a declared national monument that focuses heavily on the local ostrich industry, showcasing the history of the late 19th and early 20th-century feather boom through fashion garments, grading equipment, and historical documents. The museum also preserves regional cultural history by hosting permanent life-sized street scene reconstructions, a collection of vintage transport vehicles, and the fully intact 1896 St. John Street Synagogue, which reflects the history of the area's early Jewish immigrant community.
