About The Paquita
The Wreck of the Paquita (1903) - She was a 460-ton, three-masted German barque (sailing ship) built in 1862. On the night of 18 October 1903, the ship dragged its anchors during a gale and ran onto the rocks right below the beacon. Local legends and historical reports suggest the wrecking may have been a deliberate "ship suicide" for insurance money. Divers later found the anchors arranged in a way that suggested the ship was intentionally "fastened to the rock". Visibility: If the water is exceptionally clear, you can sometimes see the dark outline of the hull from the viewpoints above the Eastern Heads Beacon.
