About Bos 400 Shipwreck

The BOS 400 is a 100-meter-long French crane barge that ran aground at Maori Bay near Duiker Point, Cape Town, on June 26, 1994. Weighing approximately 12,000 long tons, the vessel was being towed by the Russian tugboat Tigr from the Republic of Congo to Cape Town when a severe storm snapped the towline, leaving the non-propelled barge at the mercy of the rough seas.

The shipwreck remains wedged on the rocky coastline within a Marine Protected Area and can be viewed via a coastal hiking trail that begins near Sandy Bay. Due to decades of ocean exposure, the superstructure is heavily rusted and structurally unstable, prompting the National Sea Rescue Institute to issue active warnings against boarding the vessel or diving immediately adjacent to its collapsing frame.
