About Aristea

The Aristea, a fishing trawler built in Scotland in 1934 and later converted into a minesweeper for the South African Navy during World War II, met its end on July 4, 1945, shortly after being returned to its owners, I&J. Sailing through thick fog on a moonless night, and reportedly under the command of an intoxicated captain, the vessel ran aground, resulting in the tragic drowning of one crew member.
