About Jolly Rubino Shipwreck

The Jolly Rubino was an Italian-flagged, 31,000-ton, Roll-on/Roll-off (ro-ro) container ship that caught fire in September 2002 while traveling from Durban to Mombasa, ultimately grounding near the St Lucia Estuary in South Africa. Due to a severe engine room fire that could not be extinguished, the vessel was abandoned, drifted ashore in rough seas, and was eventually destroyed in 2002 via controlled explosions to prevent environmental catastrophe in a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
