About Brandvlei Dam
Brandvlei Dam, officially designated as the Greater Brandvlei Dam, is an earth-fill type dam situated on a tributary of the Breede River near Worcester in the Western Cape, South Africa. Established in 1989 by structurally integrating the original Brandvlei Dam and the adjacent Kwaggaskloof Dam, the reservoir features a storage capacity of 459 million cubic meters and covers a maximum surface area of 4,110 hectares.
The engineering infrastructure includes a primary wall standing 21.5 meters high with a length of 1,250 meters, which works in conjunction with a feeder canal system to regulate agricultural irrigation for the region's viticulture and fruit farming industries. The location functions as a hub for recreational activities managed primarily through the Worcester Yacht Club, offering infrastructure for sailing, powerboating, and camping, while serving as a recognized freshwater angling destination for smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, and carp.
