About Malachite Bird Hide
The Malachite Bird Hide, a beloved landmark in the Garden Route National Park near Wilderness, was destroyed by a fire on 26 March 2026. Located on the northern shore of Langvlei Lake along Bo-Langvlei Road, it was a prime spot for observing rare water birds. As of April 2026, the hide is closed with no confirmed timeline for reconstruction. While the surrounding wetlands were largely spared, visitors are encouraged to use nearby viewing points.
