Theewaters Nature Reserve
About Theewaters Nature Reserve
Theewaterskloof Nature Reserve is a mountainous conservation area located near Villiersdorp in the Western Cape, bordering the largest reservoir in the province, the Theewaterskloof Dam. The reserve spans a rugged landscape dominated by indigenous fynbos vegetation and features five distinct mountain peaks, with Blokkop being the highest elevation point at 1,645 metres above sea level.
It offers outdoor recreational activities including hiking and trail running, with its primary managed route being the Theewaterskloof Lookout Trail, a 7.5-kilometre out-and-back route that utilizes a rocky jeep track and leads down a steep gorge toward natural rock pools and mountain streams. The wilderness area serves a critical ecological function in managing the water catchment system for the surrounding region and is situated approximately 110 kilometres south-east of Cape Town.
