About Vermont Salt Pan

The Vermont Salt Pan is a critically endangered, mildly saline wetland located in the coastal suburb of Vermont, near Hermanus in the Western Cape of South Africa. Spanning approximately 17.5 hectares, it is a premier birdwatching destination, most famous for hosting flocks of up to 600 Greater and Lesser Flamingos that frequent the pan for up to six months of the year. Birdwatching: Beyond flamingos, the pan supports diverse species such as Pied Avocets, Black-winged Stilts, Maccoa Ducks, and Cape Shovelers. You might also spot Black Crakes and African Swamphens in the surrounding reed beds. Heritage: The eastern edge features a Milkwood woodland thicket with ancient marine shell remains, evidence of Khoekhoe (Khoisan) inhabitants from thousands of years ago. Unique Flora: The western side is home to the Disa hallackii, an endangered orchid species that is among the most threatened in the country.
