About Lovebug
The Lovebug is a centerpiece of the Sedgefield Mosaic Art Route, unveiled in August 2021 as part of the Knysna Art Project. Its creation was a massive community effort. Foundation & Prep: The car’s structure, foundation, and seating were prepared by a local team including Alistair Fraser, Cord Orford, Mike Louw, and Johannes Pyl. Restoration: Christo Pieterse and JP Oosthuizen handled the exterior surfaces, with Pieterse specifically sourcing the new wheels. The Mosaic: The intricate glass and tile work was completed by a team of volunteer mosaicists from the Masithandane community project, led by Hyla Hartlief. Visitors are encouraged to climb inside the car for photos, making it one of the most popular "selfie spots" on the Garden Route. It serves as a tribute to Sedgefield’s status as Africa’s first "Slow Town" (Cittaslow), symbolizing peace, community, and the town's artistic spirit.
