About Kogelberg Dam
The Kogelberg Dam is a significant infrastructure asset situated on the Palmiet River near Grabouw in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Completed in 1986, this 52-meter-high structure features a combined gravity and arch design with a crest length of 850 meters, and it is classified as a category 3 high hazard potential dam.
It creates a reservoir covering a surface area of 155 hectares with a total capacity of 19.3 million cubic meters, fed by a catchment area spanning 179 square kilometers. The dam serves a vital economic purpose by supplying water for regional agricultural irrigation and industrial use, while sitting adjacent to the highly biodiverse Kogelberg Nature Reserve, which forms the core of the Cape Floral Kingdom UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
