Diepkloof Rock Shelter
Elands Bay, Western CapeDiepkloof Rock Shelter is a world-renowned Middle Stone Age archaeological site located in the Western Cape of South Africa. Situated roughly 180 kilometres north of Cape Town and 14 kilometres from the coast near Elands Bay, this quartzitic sandstone shelter overlooks the Verlorenvlei River. It provides some of the earliest global evidence of human symbolic behavior and cultural expression, dating back approximately 60,000 years ago. Symbolic Engravings: Archaeologists found a unique collection of over 400 intentionally engraved ostrich eggshell fragments. These served as early, marked water containers, representing a major milestone in human abstract thought and communication. San and Khoe Rock Art: The shelter walls display remarkably well-preserved ancient rock art, including distinct handprints and painted figures. Because the shelter is located on private property and contains highly sensitive deposits, access is tightly regulated. Guided Tours: The general public can only visit the site via pre-arranged small group tours. Hikes to the shelter are conducted by appointment only. Nestled in rugged sandstone cliffs overlooking the ocean, the cave provides a remarkably preserved record of human adaptation, climate evolution, and ancient creative expression stretching back more than 80,000 years. The cave's expansive walls feature a striking gallery of ochre-hued paintings left behind by San hunter-gatherers and later Khoe pastoralists. Handprints: The site is famous for its numerous small handprints, many of which are believed by archaeologists to belong to children and young teenagers. Sacred Fauna: Bold images depict the eland—the largest antelope in the region, which held profound spiritual significance for the San—alongside other smaller animals and human figures. Layered History: The artwork overlaps in sequences, offering clear visual evidence of successive generations returning to use this sacred shelter over millennia. Getting There: Drive past the Elands Bay crayfish factory and navigate around Baboon Point. Pass the three abandoned World War II radar station ruins, and follow the designated gravel road to its end.
