About Whale Watching Coastal Route

The Whale Watching Coastal Route, snaking dynamically along the R44 (Clarence Drive) in Helderberg Rural, represents one of the world's most dramatic and accessible land-based marine viewing corridors. This serpentine tar strip hugs the base of the Hottentots Holland mountains as they plunge directly into the turquoise waters of False Bay, offering travelers breathtaking panoramic views that extend all the way to Cape Point. Holding a spectacular reputation among global road-trippers, the route transforms into a marine sanctuary between June and December when Southern Right and Humpback whales arrive close inshore to calve and play. From the iconic Whale Lookout Point just outside Gordon's Bay to the numerous roadside gravel pull-offs, drivers can easily park safely to scan the water for breaching giants or resident dolphin pods playing in the swells, making it an unmissable coastal journey.
