About South African Astronomical Observatory

The South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) headquarters at 1 Observatory Rd, Cape Town, is the national centre for optical and infrared astronomy in South Africa. Founded in 1820, it is the oldest scientific institution in Africa and is recognized as a National Heritage Site. Public Open Nights: Held on the second and fourth Saturday of every month at 20:00. Activities: Events typically include a 45-minute presentation on astronomy, a guided tour of the historic McClean Telescope, and a visit to the onsite museum and library. Stargazing: Weather permitting, guests can view the night sky through the historic telescopes. Bookings: Advanced booking is required, and fees (approximately R50 per person) must be paid online as no payments are accepted on-site.
