About Silvermine River wetland area

Silvermine River wetland area (also widely known as the Lower Silvermine Wetlands) is a beautifully rehabilitated urban floodplain and biodiversity site located between Fish Hoek and Clovelly. Originally a sand canal infested with alien vegetation, the area was transformed in 2000 into a thriving wetland reserve complete with interconnected stormwater detention ponds and landscaped coastal shrubs. The sanctuary provides crucial suburban green space for the community and serves as a vital habitat for indigenous wildlife, notably the endangered Western Leopard Toad, cape clawless otters, and various waterbirds. A flat, family-friendly circular walkway featuring a footbridge at each end provides a gentle, immersive route through the Hangklip Sand Fynbos landscape.
