The New Cape Point Lighthouse, completed in 1919, is the most powerful lighthouse on the South African coast. It was built at a lower elevation than the original 1859 tower to solve a major safety issue: the older, higher lighthouse was often hidden by low-hanging clouds and fog, which led to numerous shipwrecks. Location: Perched on a lower rocky ledge (Dias Peak) at the very tip of the Cape Peninsula, about 162 metres lower than the original structure. Power: It emits a revolving light with an intensity of 10 million candelas, visible up to 63 kilometres (34 nautical miles) away.
