About Mandela Glasses
The Mandela Glasses, officially titled Perceiving Freedom, is a large-scale public art installation located at 1 Rocklands Rd, Three Anchor Bay along the Sea Point Promenade in Cape Town. Artist: Created by Michael Elion in 2014. Symbolism: The stainless steel sculpture of oversized spectacles is positioned to look directly toward Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. Controversy: While popular as a photo spot, it faced criticism for its sponsorship by Ray-Ban, which some viewed as commercialising Mandela's legacy.
