About Intaka Island

Intaka Island is an award-winning, 16-hectare wetland and bird sanctuary located in the heart of Century City, Cape Town. Its name, derived from the isiXhosa word for "bird," reflects its role as a haven for over 120 bird species and more than 200 species of indigenous fynbos plants. It serves as a unique example of how urban development and nature conservation can coexist. Birding: One of Cape Town’s premier birding destinations, featuring two main bird hides (Heron and Kingfisher). You can spot giant, pied, and malachite kingfishers, as well as elusive species like the Little Bittern. Ferry Rides: 35-minute guided boat trips depart regularly, travelling along the Grand Canal and around the island. Walking Trails: A 2km circular self-guided trail with nine information stations and shorter 1km options. Paths are wheelchair-friendly.
