About Flying Dutchman Funicular

The Flying Dutchman Funicular is a scenic mountainside railway located at Cape Point, within the Table Mountain National Park in South Africa. It is famous for being the only commercial funicular of its type in Africa, offering a quick and novel way to reach the upper viewing area near the historic lighthouse without the strenuous uphill walk. The Ride: The funicular glides along a 585-metre track through dense fynbos vegetation, rising 87 metres from the lower parking area to the upper station. Legendary Name: It is named after the local legend of the Flying Dutchman, a ghostly ship doomed to sail the waters of the Cape forever. The two individual cars are named Nolloth and Thomas T. Tucker after real shipwrecks in the area.
