About Hangklip Lighthouse

Hangklip Lighthouse is a remote navigational beacon located on the rugged Hangklip headland in the Western Cape, South Africa. It marks the eastern entrance to False Bay and is situated between the coastal villages of Pringle Bay and Rooi Els. Construction: The 22-metre-tall concrete cylindrical tower was built in just six days using the moving form shuttering principle. Automation: It was the first fully automated lighthouse in South Africa, initially powered by its own diesel generating plant. Since 1986, it has been monitored via a telemetry system from Cape Point. Design: It is the twin of the Milnerton Lighthouse. The tower is white with a distinctive black band and a red lantern house. Beacon Specs: Its revolving electric light flashes once every 10 seconds and is visible for up to 25 nautical miles.
