Hammerhead Shark Rearing Area
About Hammerhead Shark Rearing Area
The Hammerhead Shark Rearing Area is an exceptional, hidden conservation marvel nestled directly inside a 25-square-metre netted enclosure within the scenic Point Waterfront Canal system. This unique outdoor scientific project was established by the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) to safely house rescued, vulnerable juvenile scalloped hammerhead shark pups. Because "big sharks eat little sharks" in the main aquarium tanks, these tiny pups are kept here for roughly 18 months to grow, swim, and build up mass in a safe, oxygen-rich environment monitored daily by marine biologists. Visible directly from the public boardwalks or via passing pedal-boat tours, it provides a fascinating, entirely free coastal learning point for families, walking groups, and marine life enthusiasts.
