Vanderkloof Dam Bridge
About Vanderkloof Dam Bridge
The Vanderkloof Dam Bridge is a single-lane concrete road bridge carrying the R48 provincial route across the Orange River, situated directly below the Vanderkloof Dam wall. As a critical infrastructure link, it connects the Northern Cape and Free State provinces, facilitating regional travel through the upper Karoo region.
The bridge is positioned approximately 130 kilometres downstream from the Gariep Dam and sits just below the 108-metre-high gravity-arch structure, which is the highest dam wall in South Africa. Due to its position directly in the path of the river channel, the bridge provides an unobstructed viewpoint of the dam's four floodgates and the downstream flow of the Orange River, though traffic must yield to oncoming vehicles when crossing due to its narrow single-lane design.
