About Hartbeespoort Dam Wall

The Hartbeespoort Dam Wall is an iconic 59.4-metre-high concrete arch engineering marvel crossing a dramatic gorge in the Magaliesberg mountains. Completed in 1923, it is famous for its unique Roman Triumphal Arch style, mirroring the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and serves as a vital historical gateway linking Pretoria and Rustenburg. Structure Type: Concrete single-curvature arch dam. Dimensions: 59.4 metres high and 149 metres long across the crest. Water Capacity: Holds roughly 195 to 205 million cubic metres of water at full capacity. The Arch: Features a grand concrete "Victory Arch" built to add structural weight on its weaker western flank. The Tunnel: Connects directly to a 57-metre long tunnel carved straight through the solid mountain rock.
