About Von Wielligh’s Baobab
Von Wielligh’s Baobab is an officially recognized natural heritage site located in the northern region of Kruger National Park. The tree is historically linked to Gideon Retief von Wielligh, a Surveyor-General of the South African Republic who was tasked with mapping the international boundary between the Transvaal and Mozambique. In 1891, Von Wielligh established his survey team's Camp 19 at this location and carved his initials into the trunk of the large Adansonia digitata specimen. Today, the historic landmark stands directly alongside the S93 gravel road, approximately 8 kilometers north of the Olifants Rest Camp near the confluence of the Letaba and Olifants rivers.
