Sasol Ratelpan Bird Hide
About Sasol Ratelpan Bird Hide
The Sasol Ratelpan Bird Hide is an elevated wildlife viewing structure situated on the S39 gravel road approximately 4 kilometers north of the Timbavati Picnic Site in the central region of the Kruger National Park. Positioned along the banks of the Timbavati River, the hide overlooks a large, perennial pool that attracts a high concentration of water birds and large game, including hippopotamuses and crocodiles.
The structure is fully enclosed with thatched roofing and wooden viewing slots, offering benches for visitors to sit while observing the surrounding mixed woodland and alluvial plains. Because the hide faces toward the west, morning visits provide optimal lighting conditions for birdwatching and photography, minimizing glare from the sun.
Common avian species recorded at the site include the Pied Kingfisher, Giant Kingfisher, Comb Duck, African Fish Eagle, and various herons and storks. The facility is accessible to day visitors within standard park gate hours, operates on a self-service basis, and does not contain ablution facilities, electricity, or overnight accommodation.
