Flag Boshielo Dam
About Flag Boshielo Dam
The Flag Boshielo Dam, originally commissioned in 1987 as the Arabie Dam, is a major gravity-type water reservoir located on the Olifants River near Marble Hall in the Limpopo Province. Managed by the Department of Water and Sanitation, the dam features a 36-metre-high wall that was raised in 2006 to expand its total storage capacity to approximately 185 million cubic metres.
The reservoir serves as a critical strategic water supply for municipal use, agricultural irrigation, and regional mining operations, and it is the focal point of a large-scale New Development Bank-funded pipeline project designed to deliver clean water to over 100 communities. Additionally, the dam's northern shores border the Schuinsdraai Nature Reserve, making the area a noted habitat for wildlife, including a dense population of Nile crocodiles as well as a prominent destination for freshwater angling, supporting over 20 fish species such as carp, bass, and tilapia.
