About Echo Caves

The Echo Caves are an extraordinary underground wonder located on the border of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, approximately 26 km north of Ohrigstad. Formed in Precambrian dolomite rock billions of years ago, they are widely considered some of the oldest limestone caves in the world and are protected as a South African National Monument. The "Echo" Name: The cave system features hollow stalactite structures that produce a distinct acoustic resonance when tapped. Historically, the Pedi people used these formations as ancestral drums to warn their tribes of approaching Swazi warriors, allowing them to seek refuge deep inside. Massive Scale: While the total system spans over 40 kilometres into the mountains, the public can explore a safe, well-lit 2-kilometre stretch featuring impressive chambers like the Crystal Palace and the Samson Chamber. The caves are open to the public every day of the year. Standard guided walks last between 45 to 75 minutes, routing through secure walkways, stairs, and handrails.
