About Doorndraai Dam
Doorndraai Dam is a significant reservoir located on the Sterk River in the Limpopo province, situated approximately 30 kilometers southwest of Mokopane within the foothills of the Waterberg Range. Established in 1952 and subsequently expanded in 1974, the dam serves a vital role in providing municipal and industrial water supply to the surrounding region while featuring a total storage capacity of 46,500,000 cubic meters and a surface area of 560.6 hectares.
The reservoir is completely enclosed by the 7,000-hectare Doorndraai Dam Nature Reserve, a protected area managed by Limpopo Wildlife Resorts that encompasses diverse landscapes of open savannah bushveld, dense woodlands, and rocky ravines. This sanctuary supports a wide array of wildlife, including giraffe, zebra, sable antelope, tsessebe, and leopard, alongside an abundant bird population featuring the African Fish-eagle and Martial Eagle. Visited primarily for outdoor recreation, the site accommodates activities such as freshwater angling for carp and bass, water sports like boating and kayaking, and land-based exploration via dedicated hiking trails, mountain biking tracks, and a 14-kilometer game-viewing road.
