Points of Interest

Longwe Lookout

Kruger National Park, LimpopoLongwe Lookout is an elevated scenic viewpoint located at the terminus of the S62 gravel road, approximately 16 kilometres north of Letaba Rest Camp within South Africa's Kruger National Park. Situated on a high hill overlooking the Letaba River, this officially designated "get-out point" allows self-drive visitors to legally exit their vehicles at their own risk to take in panoramic views of the surrounding mopaniveld shrubland and the nearby Engelhard Dam. According to SANParks accessibility profiles, the site features a flat, compacted earth and gravel turnaround area for vehicles, though it remains a basic viewpoint without public toilet facilities. Because of its vantage point over the river system, it serves as a prominent spot for tracking large game like elephants and hippos, while the riverine bush below frequently attracts diverse avian species, including the Green-backed Heron and the Hamerkop.View details →

Masorini Archaeological Site

Kruger National Park, LimpopoThe Masorini Archaeological Site is a reconstructed late Iron Age village located 12 kilometers east of the Phalaborwa Gate along the H9 route in South Africa’s Kruger National Park. Inhabited during the 19th century by the BaPhalaborwa people, a Northern Sotho group, the settlement functioned as an advanced center for mining, smelting, and forging iron ore into agricultural tools and weapons. The site's physical layout reflected its strict social hierarchy, segregating the iron smelters on the lower hillside terraces from the higher-status blacksmiths on the upper terraces, while the tribal chieftain resided separately on nearby Shikumbu Hill. The community engaged in long-distance trade, bartering their refined metal goods with coastal Portuguese, Arab, and Chinese merchants for commodities like glass beads and cloth before the settlement was abandoned during the Mfecane conflicts. Today, the location operates as an open-air museum managed by South African National National Parks (SANParks), featuring excavated artifacts, restored dome-shaped clay furnaces, traditional thatched huts, and a public picnic area with braai facilities.View details →
