About Durnford Point Lighthouse
The lighthouse and the headland are named after Colonel Anthony William Durnford, who served as the colonial engineer for Natal in the 1870s. In its early years, the light was an unattended acetylene gas beacon maintained by a local part-time custodian who reported malfunctions to a shopkeeper in Umhlatuzi. Over the decades, the station has faced challenges from both coastal erosion and vandalism.
