About Border Cave

Border Cave is a globally significant archaeological site located in the western Lebombo Mountains of northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, near the village of Nkungwini. Perched on a steep cliff overlooking eSwatini, this semi-circular rock shelter preserves an unbroken stratigraphic record of human occupation spanning approximately 250,000 years. It has provided scientists with crucial evidence regarding the anatomical evolution, technological innovation, and complex cognitive development of early modern humans (Homo sapiens). Anatomically Modern Humans: The cave has yielded critical fossil remains of Homo sapiens, including a well-preserved infant burial associated with an ostrich eggshell bead, indicating early symbolic or spiritual practices. Location: Situated in the remote Ingwavuma district near Nkungwini village, roughly 82 km west of the Indian Ocean. The Site: The shelter is roughly 50 metres wide and 35 metres deep, shaped by the weathering of Lower Jurassic volcanic rocks. It faces west, offering sweeping views of the lowveld below. There is a small on-site museum featuring models, archaeological dioramas, and educational exhibits. These tell the story of the prehistoric human life, counting artifacts, and excavations discovered there.
