Old Wagon Bridge

Vereeniging, GautengThe Old Wagon Bridge in Vereeniging is a single-lane steel truss bridge spanning the Vaal River along Mario Milani Drive, immediately adjacent to Dickinson Park. Officially opened in 1921, the structure was built to replace the historic Viljoens Drift ferry service, establishing a critical, permanent transport link for vehicles and wagons between the Free State and Transvaal (now Gauteng) provinces. The bridge's regional significance was later reflected in the town's historical 1931 emblem and 1955 coat of arms, which featured a symbolic depiction of a bridge over a river. It served as the primary vehicular crossing for nearly 70 years until its decommissioning around 1990 when the modern FW de Klerk Bridge on the R82 was constructed nearby. Today, the inactive steel monument remains standing as an unrestored piece of industrial heritage, though the surrounding park infrastructure has experienced structural degradation over recent decades.View details →
