About Otter Bridge
Otter Bridge is a prominent wildlife viewing vantage point located over a river weir within the Rietvlei Nature Reserve in Pretoria. It is widely recognised by visitors as a premier hotspot for birdwatching and photography, offering a stationary location to observe diverse aquatic and terrestrial wildlife.
While named after the Cape clawless otters that inhabit the water system, the area is also frequented by large mammals such as waterbuck, buffalo, and zebra, alongside a variety of indigenous water birds like kingfishers and spoonbills. Because it is a low-lying structure crossing the water flow that feeds into the main Rietvlei Dam, the bridge is subject to temporary closures by reserve management during periods of heavy rainfall when rising water levels flood the roadway.
