About Leeukop Prison Dam
Leeuwkop Prison Dam is a freshwater recreational fishing and camping venue located within the high-security grounds of the Leeuwkop Correctional Services facility in Sunninghill, Johannesburg. Managed by the Department of Correctional Services, the small, circular dam serves as a budget-friendly destination primarily targeted by local bank anglers for carp and barbel (catfish).
The venue strictly enforces a catch-and-release policy for carp, while on-site regulations occasionally dictate that barbel are removed from the water. Visitors are required to pass through prison security gates to access the venue, which offers basic amenities including flush toilets, showers, overnight camping sites, and paid electrical points. Because the bank can become crowded on weekends, anglers frequently utilize short-distance casting strategies to minimize tangled lines, and visitors must bring their own food, drinks, and angling equipment as there are no retail shops at the water's edge.
