About Peme (Leeukop)

Peme, commonly known as Leeukop, is a prominent mountain and historical site located in the district of Vrede in the north-eastern Free State, South Africa. Royal Residence: It served as a capital and stronghold for ancient leaders. Notably, Chief Lebaka, a son of Molatodi, is said to have ruled from and eventually died at Peme (Leeukop) during a conflict with the Bahlakwana. Archaeological Site: The mountain is home to significant Type N stone-walled settlements on its southern side, which are characteristic of early Sotho-Tswana inhabitants in the region.
