About Kwelera National Botanical Garden

The Kwelera National Botanical Garden is South Africa's 10th national botanical garden and the first established in the Eastern Cape. Located at the Kwelera River Mouth near East London, it is a unique coastal garden that incorporates the existing Kwelera Nature Reserve. As of 2026, while the natural reserve portion and beach are accessible to the public, the formal 10-hectare landscaped garden section is still under phased development and is not yet fully open with standard public amenities. Hiking & Nature Walks: Visitors can explore the Strandloper Trail, which passes through the garden's beach, or take the 1.5 km hike to the top of the dune forest for panoramic views of the Wild Coast.
