About 1838 Monument Swellendam

The 1838 Monument located on Voortrek Street in Swellendam, Western Cape, is a historical landmark established to commemorate the centenary of the Great Trek. Unveiled in December 1938, the stone structure was erected during the nationwide symbolic ox-wagon trek that marked one hundred years since the 1838 migration of Voortrekkers from the Cape Colony.

The monument site features historic cannons mounted on masonry bases alongside commemorative stone plaques. Situated within the town's historic core, the monument functions as a physical record of twentieth-century centenary celebrations and stands in close proximity to other regional heritage sites, including the 1838 Oefeningshuis and the Drostdy Museum complex.
