About Major-General Andrew Gilbert Wauchope

The grave and memorial of Major-General Andrew Gilbert Wauchope are located in the historic Monument Cemetery near Matjiesfontein, situated within the Laingsburg municipality of the Western Cape. Historical Background Death: General Wauchope ("Red Mick") was killed on 11 December 1899 leading the Highland Brigade at the Battle of Magersfontein near Kimberley. Controversial Reburial: He was initially buried on the battlefield with his men. James Logan, the founder of Matjiesfontein, secured permission from Wauchope’s grieving widow to move the body 400 miles south to his private cemetery. Rumours persisted that Logan did this to create a local tourist attraction. Notable Neighbours: The cemetery is a National Monument. It also holds the graves of James Logan, legendary English cricketer George Lohmann, and several British soldiers who died in the local wartime hospital.
