About Jan Hendrik Hofmeyr

The statue of Jan Hendrik Hofmeyr, better known as "Onze Jan" (Our Jan), is a bronze monument located in Church Square, Cape Town. Sculpted by the renowned artist Anton van Wouw, it was unveiled on 5 July 1920 to honour Hofmeyr's influential role as a journalist and politician. "Onze Jan" Hofmeyr (1845–1909): He was a leader of the Afrikaner Bond and a key advocate for the recognition of Dutch (and subsequently Afrikaans) as an official language in South Africa. The Inscription: The pedestal features the phrase "Is het ons ernst?" (Is it our serious intent?), reflecting his dedication to the preservation of his cultural heritage.
