About J.F. Marais Memorial

The J.F. Marais Memorial, marked by a historic cross and monument along the winding Clarence Drive (R44), offers a deeply poignant and scenic stop for travelers exploring the Overberg coastline. This landmark honors the legacy of Dr. J.F. Marais (1866–1901), a brilliant 35-year-old scholar and Rector of the Stellenbosch Gymnasium (now Paul Roos Gymnasium), who tragically drowned at this exact coastal spot in 1901. Prior to his untimely passing, Dr. Marais earned a DSc from Edinburgh University and rendered invaluable service to South Africa's agricultural heritage by selecting American wild grape rootstocks to combat the devastating phylloxera plague that was decimating the Cape wine industry. Today, the memorial acts as a quiet roadside pull-off where visitors can take a reflective pause, admire the crashing waves of False Bay's rocky shoreline, and marvel at the steep cliffs of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve.
