About Eugène Marais House
The Eugène Marais House, situated on the historic Welgegund farm in the Pelindaba area near Hartbeespoort, is a proclaimed provincial heritage site famously associated with the prominent South African naturalist and writer Eugène Marais. Originally built by his close friend and prominent intellectual Gustav Preller, the stone rondavel served as Marais' final residence, where he conducted ecological research and ultimately committed suicide in 1936.
On March 2, 1973, the structure was declared a National Monument due to its deep connection to early Afrikaans literary history and regional heritage. Today, the property sits adjacent to the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) complex and remains linked to the Phaladingwe Nature Trail, featuring the Preller family graves, traditional thatched slate architecture, and a dedicated memorial cairn.
