About Samora Machel Monument

The Samora Machel Monument is a National Heritage Site located in Mbuzini, Mpumalanga, South Africa. It marks the exact spot where the Tupolev TU 134A-3 aircraft carrying the first President of Mozambique, Samora Machel, crashed on 19 October 1986. Symbolic Pipes: The central feature is 35 steel tubes representing the lives lost in the crash. These tubes are designed to act as an "Aeolian organ," creating a wailing or whispering sound when the wind blows through them. Original Wreckage: Parts of the plane's wreckage are preserved and integrated into the site's art installations and museum exhibitions.
