About Shiyane Zulu Monument

The Shiyane Zulu Monument, located at the Rorke's Drift Battlefield in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is a historical marker erected in 2006 to honor the estimated 500 to 800 Zulu warriors who died during the Battle of Rorke's Drift in January 1879. Commissioned by Amafa Heritage KwaZulu-Natal and sculpted by artist Peter Hall, the bronze memorial features a leopard symbolising the Zulu monarchy resting atop traditional izihlangu (ox-hide shields). It incorporates a living Mphafa (Buffalo Thorn) tree, which holds deep cultural significance in Zulu tradition for guiding the spirits of the deceased back home.
