The Newcastle Town Hall, located in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, is a prominent historical landmark and a declared National Monument. Completed in 1899, it stands as a testament to the town's colonial history and its strategic importance during the late 19th century. Commemoration: Construction began in 1897 to honour Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. War Involvement: The building was finished just months before the start of the Second Anglo-Boer War in October 1899. During the conflict, Boer forces occupied the town (renaming it Viljoensdorp) and used the Town Hall to store pillaged furniture and loot. The Clock Tower: After the main building was finished, local residents raised funds to add a clock. A famous local legend tells of a touring orchestra conductor who once stopped a performance at the hall because he thought a member of the audience was snoring; it was later discovered to be an owl in the clock tower.
