About Ultimatum Tree
The Ultimatum Tree is a historical heritage site located on the banks of the Thukela River near Mandeni, KwaZulu-Natal. On 11 December 1878, British colonial officials met under this sycamore fig tree to present an ultimatum to delegates representing King Cetshwayo of the Zulu Kingdom. The document demanded the disbandment of the Zulu army and the abandonment of key aspects of Zulu sovereignty within 30 days.
King Cetshwayo rejected these terms, leading British forces to cross the Thukela River on 11 January 1879 and initiate the Anglo-Zulu War. While the original tree eventually collapsed due to natural decay, flooding, and fire damage, a grafted offspring was successfully planted at the original location inside a protected enclosure adjacent to the historic Fort Pearson site.
