About Fort Tenedos

Fort Tenedos was a British earthwork fortification constructed between 13 and 17 January 1879 on the north bank of the Tugela River during the opening phases of the Anglo-Zulu War. Engineered under the direction of Captain W. R. C. Wynne of the Royal Engineers, the fort was established to secure a vital bridgehead for Colonel Charles Knight Pearson's coastal column invading Zululand from the Natal colony.

It was named after HMS Tenedos, a Royal Navy corvette anchored off the river mouth that provided sailors and equipment for the campaign, including a specialized Gatling gun and naval artillery pieces deployed to defend the structure. Situated directly across the river from Fort Pearson, the site initially garrisoned elements of the 91st Highlanders, the Naval Brigade, and local colonial volunteer units to safeguard communication lines and supply networks. Today, the remnants of the fort are located near the Harold Johnson Nature Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, where only minimal traces of the original earthworks survive alongside historical markers noting its strategic role in the 1879 invasion.
